Apparently Hasim Rahman (pictured above with the author) wants to fight again.
One of my favourite Boxing Life Stories episodes was with The Rock. We recorded it at the DLX Boxing Gym in Las Vegas in the summer of 2023 and Rahman was on great form.
There was no sign that he wanted to box.
It is not something I would even encourage with the question about whether he would return to the ring, for a fighter who is now 53 and whose form was checkered – at best – when he walked away.
He’s had 62 pro fights and has not fought since June 2014.
Now he is due to compete on a show in Upstate New York and who knows whether he will get licensed, first and foremost.
“It’s something that’s in me,” Rahman told me during that podcast. “The identity as the heavyweight champion is there forever. Like it, love it, it’s there. I’ve never retired. Now my actions may show something different but I’ve never declared that I’m a retired fighter. For me, I feel like being heavyweight champion of the world, all that’s going to do is propel me to be champion in anything I do. Because I already raised the bar for myself. So now, whatever endeavours I get into, the goal is to be the champ.”
