September 19th see’s the long awaited return of the “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr to the squared circle at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada. After almost a 2 year lay off from the sport, the former Pound for Pound king is back and he wants his Pound for Pound title back.
To step into the ring on his return against such a seasoned warrior such as Juan Manuel Marquez shows the confidence that Maywether has in himself. 18 months or so ago when Floyd announced his ‘retirement’ many didn’t believe him, or at least they didn’t think it was going to be permanent. They may have been proven right, but many thought it wouldn’t take almost 2 years for Floyd to find the ring again.
We all know that in those 2 years, Floyd has not been living an unhealhy lifestyle. Seeing him at the weigh-in, in such great physical condition only confirmed that Maywether has clearly stayed in tip top condition, being the workaholic he is. Yet still, he is coming up against a fantastic counter puncher in Marquez, and any ring rust which may creep in, could cause Floyd some problems.
Many feel that Floyd is overlooking this fight, as he eye’s a mouth watering clash with Manny Pacquiao, the man who was given the Pound for Pound mantle when Mayweather retired. The talk is all about Floyd coming back, and that he and Manny will get it on. There are two huge challenges before this can happen, and the Mexican Warrior Marquez, might just fancy spoiling the party.
Marquez is an all time great, a garunteed hall of famer, and a contender as one of Mexico’s all time best fighters. Yet he seems to have lived in the shadow of Manny Pacquaio. The fact that he has drawn once and lost a controversial decision against Manny shows the pedigree of Marquez. And over the last year he has followed Manny up the weights, blasting through the opposition.
While this event is all about Mayweather returning, Marquez could pull off a massive scalp here, and be a step closer to getting a 3rd fight with Pacquiao. Marquez’s resume already reads like a who’s who of boxings lower weight classes, and if he can pull off the unimaginable in beating Floyd and then Manny, he turns all time great lists on their head.
Whatever the outcome of the fight this Saturday night, it is going to be an intriuging contest. Will Floyd be up to his brilliant best, will he be lacking in speed, will there be ring rust there, can Marquez carry his power up even further, can he be a wily counter puncher against the defensive genius? This fight is by no means a one sided gimmie as the bookies seem to have it. There are many variables to this contest, but this observer for one will be glued to the tv for it.
Hopefully there will be some fireworks in the ring tonight, and we get to see two all time greats in an all time great match. And we know for sure, the result will only incur more drama as to who will face the winner of the Pacquiao/Cotto match up early next year!
Prediction: Mayweather to win by comfortable UD after settling into the fight.
