Boxing – A New Year: Time For Changes?

January 5th, 2010 No comments

As we roll into a New Decade, there is only 1 fight on the mind of most fight fans! Since the turn of the century, there have been 2 men who can claim they are up there amongst the all time best pound for pound boxers. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have began a fued over blood testing which has ingited an impending lawsuit by Team Pacman against the Mayweathers and Goldenboy. Tongues have wagged and people have been quick to jump to conclusions. Is Pacquiao a drug cheat? Is Mayweather ducking the challenge?

What this sorry mess has done, is jeapordise one of the biggest fights in boxing history, to rival the Rumble in the Jungle, the Thriller in Manilla, Hagler vs Hearns and Tyson vs Holyfield. However it has also brought to light something that has, for years, had people turning a blind eye to! Drugs have always been involved in sport, for someone to gain an unfair advantage over an opponent. Boxing is no different, but then again boxing is a lethal sport without the added advantage someone make gain by using drugs.

Innocent until proven otherwise is definately the case here. Supporters of both camps make accussations and excuses against the other. Whether this is a huge publicity stunt or not, it should make the boxing authorities think about amending rules on drugs test to eliminate and cheats. Mayweather may have accidently opened up the gates to a reveiw here, and it can only be for the better.

Should the sport act now on amending testing to try and catch the drug cheats, or will we have to wait for someones untimely death due to injuries suffered in the ring at the hands of a “juiced” boxer? Are current tests sufficient enough to catch the most advanced performance enhancing drugs? And does blood testing have its disadvantages and have an affect on a boxers’ performance and condition in the ring?

There are many factors to consider and questions to be answered here. But this observer is always welcome of a review of how things are done, especially if it will eliminate any cheats in this already dangerous sport.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather – Battle for the Pound for Pound Number 1

Manny Pacquiao - Pound for Pound number 1?

Manny Pacquiao - Pound for Pound number 1?

Last weekend, Manny Pacquiao continued to defy all laws of nature by steam rolling over Miguel Cotto, regarded as one of the most solid Welterweight fighters on the planet. The Puerto Ricans only loss up until last week was to the huge, tough and granite chinned Antonio Margarito who later on was to become one of the most disgraced boxers in history with the plaster in wraps incident. Against Cotto, serious questions were to be asked of Manny Pacquiao. He had already come up 7 weights and dismantled future greats in Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, however questions still remained. Oscar De La Hoya had been weight drained and looked a shadow of his former self. Had Hattons lifestyle finally caught up with him and his chin not what it once was?

Cotto was altogether a different animal. He’s a tough, tough fighter who has great boxing skills and probably mor power than anyone Manny had ever faced. Yet for all his attributes, the Filipino had an answer. Pacquiao’s blistering speed was always going to be key, but it was his ability to trade with Cotto and come out unscathed that shocked most observers. Pacquiao appears to be defying all logic and getting better with weight. For a man who started out at 105lbs and had been knocked out at much lower weights, Pacquiao’s dominance at the higher weights is remarkable.

We are all set to find out who really is the Pound for Pound King. A few years back when these two men were regarded as number 1 and 2, they were fighting three or four weights apart and there was never a thought they could actually meet. Now Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are on a collision course in the same weight class. Manny has just easily disposed of the man many believed would be able to dethrone Floyd in Miguel Cotto. The question is can Mayweather come up trumps against a man that little bit more faster than him, and who appears to have brought some serious power up with him along the way?

This fight is a must, and looks likely to happen. Floyd talks a good fight, but it is ultimately going to be down to him as to whether the fight is going to happen or not, as we know Manny will fight anyone. The winner of this bout would be regarded as one of the best boxers of all time and go down in history, the loser will not have a ruined reputation, but leave a legacy behind in their own role to find the best pound for pound fighter on the planet.

Mayweather vs Marquez: The Long Awaited Return of the P4P King

September 19th, 2009 1 comment

September 19th see’s the long awaited return of the “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr to the squared circle at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada. After almost a 2 year lay off from the sport, the former Pound for Pound king is back and he wants his Pound for Pound title back.

To step into the ring on his return against such a seasoned warrior such as Juan Manuel Marquez shows the confidence that Maywether has in himself. 18 months or so ago when Floyd announced his ‘retirement’ many didn’t believe him, or at least they didn’t think it was going to be permanent. They may have been proven right, but many thought it wouldn’t take almost 2 years for Floyd to find the ring again.

We all know that in those 2 years, Floyd has not been living an unhealhy lifestyle. Seeing him at the weigh-in, in such great physical condition only confirmed that Maywether has clearly stayed in tip top condition, being the workaholic he is. Yet still, he is coming up against a fantastic counter puncher in Marquez, and any ring rust which may creep in, could cause Floyd some problems.

Many feel that Floyd is overlooking this fight, as he eye’s a mouth watering clash with Manny Pacquiao, the man who was given the Pound for Pound mantle when Mayweather retired. The talk is all about Floyd coming back, and that he and Manny will get it on. There are two huge challenges before this can happen, and the Mexican Warrior Marquez, might just fancy spoiling the party.

Marquez is an all time great, a garunteed hall of famer, and a contender as one of Mexico’s all time best fighters. Yet he seems to have lived in the shadow of Manny Pacquaio. The fact that he has drawn once and lost a controversial decision against Manny shows the pedigree of Marquez. And over the last year he has followed Manny up the weights, blasting through the opposition.

While this event is all about Mayweather returning, Marquez could pull off a massive scalp here, and be a step closer to getting a 3rd fight with Pacquiao. Marquez’s resume already reads like a who’s who of boxings lower weight classes, and if he can pull off the unimaginable in beating Floyd and then Manny, he turns all time great lists on their head.

Whatever the outcome of the fight this Saturday night, it is going to be an intriuging contest. Will Floyd be up to his brilliant best, will he be lacking in speed, will there be ring rust there, can Marquez carry his power up even further, can he be a wily counter puncher against the defensive genius? This fight is by no means a one sided gimmie as the bookies seem to have it. There are many variables to this contest, but this observer for one will be glued to the tv for it.

Hopefully there will be some fireworks in the ring tonight, and we get to see two all time greats in an all time great match. And we know for sure, the result will only incur more drama as to who will face the winner of the Pacquiao/Cotto match up early next year!

Prediction: Mayweather to win by comfortable UD after settling into the fight.
